RELEASE: Decision regarding the 2020 WCCHA Challenge Showcase

July 15, 2020 (Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN) – In light of ongoing unknowns regarding the 2020-2021 season, likely restrictions placed upon team operations and the safety of all participants, the WCCHA has cancelled the 2020 Fall Challenge Showcase. The 16-team event was scheduled to take place Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2020, at the NSC Super Rink in Blaine, MN.

From WCCHA Commissioner Ryan Donovan:

“After careful consideration of the many facets of the event, the uncertainty surrounding the start of the season, and likely impact of COVID-19 in the fall, we have decided to cancel the 2020 WCCHA Challenge Showcase. In normal times, this large event is meant to provide a unique opportunity for 16 teams to come together under one roof for a weekend of exciting competition unmatched anywhere else during the regular season. Unfortunately, in these times that same setup introduces many additional risks for potential spread and would require significant alterations to begin to consider holding games. With safety at the forefront, we thus think the best path forward is to cancel this event for next season.”

The WCCHA would like to thank those teams that “accepted the challenge” to participate in 2020, and will be working with both our membership and interested participant teams to potentially reschedule individual series at home game sites. The league and its members hope to once again host this annual event beginning in 2021.
